Google's highest-scoring model on the big public leaderboards right now is Gemini 3.8 Flash. When it launched on September 2, Google put it in the Gemini app for AI Pro and Ultra subscribers. At launch, AI Plus and free users stayed on Gemini 3.6 Flash.

That would be fair if 3.8 Flash cost Google a lot more to serve. Its own price list says otherwise.

Same price, different paywall

On the Gemini API, Gemini 3.6 Flash, 3.7 Flash and 3.8 Flash cost exactly the same: $0.75 per million input tokens and $3.75 per million output tokens until December 31, 2026, then $1.50 and $7.50. Developers even get 3.8 Flash on the API free tier.

So the model that separates a $4.99 Google AI Plus plan from a $19.99 AI Pro plan is not a more expensive model. It is the same price tier with a newer version number. The model is not what the extra $15 pays for.

What the $15 buys on the API instead

Take a heavy but realistic personal month: 2 million input tokens and 0.5 million output tokens. That is a lot of long chats, documents and code. Here is what it costs at list prices:

Model Cost for that month
Gemini 3.8 Flash (API, until Dec 31) $3.38
Gemini 3.8 Flash (API, from 2027) $6.75
GPT-6 Sol $9.00
Claude Sonnet 5 $9.00
Claude Opus 5.5 $18.00
GPT-6 Astra $45.00

The $15 Plus-to-Pro difference buys that month of 3.8 Flash more than four times today, and still twice after the 2027 price change. For the same $15 you could also run a full month of GPT-6 Sol or Claude Sonnet 5 and still have money left. (Our calculation from the official price pages; your own usage will differ, which is exactly why a pay-per-token bill is fairer for most people.)

Where is the frontier model, Google?

This is the part that should annoy Gemini fans the most. Google's newest Pro model is still Gemini 3.1 Pro Preview. At I/O in May, Google said it looked forward to rolling out Gemini 3.5 Pro "next month". In July it was still "currently testing with partners", and Google said it had started pre-training Gemini 4. As of today, Google's API price list still has no 3.5 Pro.

Meanwhile, on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index, Gemini 3.1 Pro Preview scores 30, below Google's own 3.6 Flash (34) and 3.8 Flash (41). The frontier sits elsewhere: Claude Opus 5.5 at 58, GPT-6 Astra and Claude Fable 5.1 at 53.

So the "Pro" in the Gemini app is not the smartest thing Google sells, and the smartest thing Google sells is a Flash model that is not a frontier model on this index.

To be fair to Google

  • AI Pro is more than a model. Compared with AI Plus it includes 5 TB of storage instead of 400 GB, a 1M-token context window instead of 128K, twice the usage limits, 1,000 Flow credits instead of 200, and tools like Jules. If you use those, the math changes.
  • Everyone gates their best model. Claude Free has no Opus, and ChatGPT reserves its top GPT-6 Astra reasoning for Pro.
  • Rankings disagree. On LMArena, where people vote on answers, Gemini 3.8 Flash ranks #10, ahead of GPT-6 Astra at #26. Artificial Analysis measures differently and puts it clearly behind.
  • The API is cheap and fast. Even at the 2027 price, 3.8 Flash costs a fraction of GPT-6 Astra or Claude Fable 5.1, and Artificial Analysis measures it at roughly three times the output speed of Opus 5.5.

Who should pay for AI Pro, and who shouldn't

Pay for it if you actually use 5 TB of Google storage, generate video and images with Flow, or simply never want to see an API key.

Skip it if the only reason is "the smarter Gemini". Use 3.8 Flash in Google AI Studio or through the API and pay per token. You will almost certainly spend less, and you can switch to GPT-6 Sol or Claude the day they suit you better.

And Google: ship the Pro model. A price list where the Flash beats the Pro is not a flex.
